Inauguration of Computer Centre at Steria Sweden School

Steria The computer centre at Govt. Higher Secondary School, Pallikarani, Chennai, was inaugurated by Anders Fryxell, Director Operations Services, Steria Sweden, on 10 February 2011. This school is supported by Steria Sweden under the OSOCOS program. The computer centre with 10 brand new machines will go a long way in meeting a longstanding requirement of the school to impart computer education to the children of the school.

The chief guest - Anders, accompanied by Eric from Steria Denmark were accorded a traditional south Indian welcome with garlands and shawls. The centre was formally thrown open with the cutting of the ribbon and the lighting of the lamp. This was followed by a colorful dance performance staged by the children for the visitors.



Career Development Centre at Noida – Inauguration

Steria The first Career Development Centre (CDC), a Steria India – NIIT partnership, a certified short term course, which provides relevant IT learning and other soft skills to youngsters passing out of Steria supported schools and other youth, making them employable, leading to jobs specially in India’s booming retail and hospitality sectors, was inaugurated on 14 February 2011 at Noida. The dignitaries at the function included Mr. P. Rajendran, COO, NIIT and other officials from NIIT Foundation. Steria India was represented by Dr.Mukesh Aghi, CEO, Ms.Solfrid Skilbrigt, Director HR, Scandinavia, Mr.Gurinder Vir Singh, Noida Centre Head and the India CSR team.

The centre is located in the Noida Public Library premises in Sector 15, and provides job oriented and IT skills based training for youth from the surrounding locality. There are over 100 youngsters enrolled for the courses offered by the CDC, which has a tie up with several corporates, malls, retail chains and hotels etc, for providing placement to those completing the courses. The first batch comprising of 14 students who completed the course in Jan’2011, have already been placed in various retail outlets in Noida.

Steria India CSR sees this initiative as natural progression on its value chain. While SIFGSS provides assistance to bright children passing out of Steria supported schools to pursue a college education, what about the not so bright ones, who also have dreams of better and brighter tomorrow. Steria – NIIT CDCs, hopefully will show them the way forward to a corporate job and with it the promise of a brighter tomorrow.

Junior Achievement Problem Solving Training in Chennai

On 16 February 2011, volunteers from JA (Junior Achievement) part of JA Worldwide, conducted a brief training workshop for 58 Chennai Steria staff in Chennai office. The workshop which began at 10am lasted for over 2 hours till 12.30pm. Steria staff members were briefed on simple analytical techniques that they could use to enhance their problem solving skills. Most important they were also shown how to use these skills to train others and help them in their development and learning.

These trained Steria staff volunteers would then be visiting Steria supported schools in Chennai and impart training to the school children and offer them advice on how they could develop their analytical abilities and problem solving skills relevant to their academic and career interests.
