Environment Day across Steria India (June 3, 2011)
World Environment Day was observed on 3 June 2011 in
Steria offices across Noida, Chennai and Pune. Green
Championsat these centers conducted a number of activities
which included tree plantation, clean desk drive, collection
of paper to be reused, jute bags sales, lights out,
no paper day, etc. Dress code for the day was ‘Green’.
- In Chennai,
the Jute bag sales stall was organized with a woman’s
self help group - The Tamil Nadu Women Dev. Corporation
(TNWDC). The response was extremely good and sales
for the day was more than Rs.18,000. In Noida, the
response from the employees for the sale of jute bags
and ‘Go Green’ mugs was also encouraging.
- In Pune,
a 'No Paper Cup day' was observed, resulting in a
saving of over 2500 cups on Environment Day. Staff
brought their own mugs from home for their Tea/Coffee.
- Clean
Desk Day was observed in all the offices in Steria.
Information to clean and clear the desks prior to
the collection drive was communicated to the staff.
The Green Champions of the respective accounts collected
used paper from each employee. One side used paper
was put back into use in the printer rooms. Approximately
20000 sheets were collected in Chennai and 5 cartons
of 40 kgs each were collected in Noida. In Pune, 4
cartons of waste paper was collected from each desk
and sent to our NGO partner, 'Goonj' (www.goonj.org
) - which in turn will recycle and reuse it in order
to make note books, note pads, envelopes etc. for
schools located in rural areas.
- No Paper
Day – The printers were switched off from 1pm to 5pm
in Noida and Chennai saving approximately 10-12 reams
of paper. In Pune, effective control and monitoring
of the printer paper usage brought the paper ream
consumption down to 4 reams (against the average of
10 reams per day).
- Lights
out Campaign – All offices in Steria observed the
‘Lights Out Campaign” from 5.00 PM to 6.00 PM on 3
June 2011. Apart from essential lights, all other
lights had been switched off to reduce power consumption.
- In Pune,
a distinct highlight this year was a foray into the
jungle by Nature Club members. A one day trek cum'
eco walk was organized to Tamhini Forest in the West
Ghats near Pune. 15 staff participated in this exciting
event on 4 June, 2011.
Steria Noida Summer Camp 2011
More than 250 children participated in Noida Summer
Camp 2011, an annual event for children of Steria supported
schools in Noida, which began on 23rd June 2011. These
children belong to 3 different Steria supported schools
in and around Noida. The various fun and learning activities
at this year’s camp included, theatre, dance, puppetry,
sports and English language skills.
Also, at SGSM Dujana School Ghaziabad,
Noida, 85 children successfully completed a mehandi
(Henna) workshop – as part of the summer camp, in May
2011,They were taught designing and artistically applying
henna on the hands and feet of their friends and family
members. In June,100 children also attended an embroidery
workshop organised for girls at SGSM Dujana School during
the summer camp.
The concluding session of the Noida
Summer Camp was held on 6 July 2011 in Bharat Ghar Auditorium,
Sec 12, Noida. The Chief Guests included Mr. Mukund
Menon – HR Director Steria, Mr. C.L.Chauhan – Principal
JHS School Sec 12 Noida and Mr. Y. Sharma (RWA) Chairman.
This was the occasion for the children to come forward,
perform and showcase all that they had learnt during
the camp. The teachers and Steria staff volunteers also
joined the children on stage. School bags sponsored
by Boots – a Steria client were distributed to all the
children who participated in the summer camp. The video

Blood Donation Camps in Steria
Blood donation camp was held on Pune Campus on 14 June
2011. This camp was organised in partnership with Aditya
Birla Hospital Blood Bank. In Chennai, the blood donation
camp was organised in partnership with ‘Jeevan Blood
Bank’ on 5 July 2011. While a considerable number of
our staff were keen to give blood, after the screening
for suitability, 113 staff members in Chennai and 94
staff members in Pune, were finally able to donate blood.
Many of them have enrolled themselves as permanent blood
donors.
Steria Scholar helps in CSR projects
Our Steria Scholar - S.Sangeetha, now a full fledged
engineer, conducted maths tuitions for Medavakkam School
kids in the month of June and also taught theatre skills
to 50 children in Padma Adarsh Orphanage home during
the summer holidays.
